Vanuatu Schengen Access 2026: What Changed and What's Next
On 12 December 2024, the European Council formally ended Vanuatu's Schengen Area visa exemption. This was the culmination of a process that began in May 2022 when the EU first suspended Vanuatu's visa-free access. The UK had already withdrawn visa-free access for Vanuatu passport holders in 2023.
What Actually Happened
The EU's concerns centred on Vanuatu's CBI program specifically — not the country itself. The European Commission identified issues including the volume of passports issued to foreign nationals, insufficient due diligence procedures, and a lack of information sharing with applicants' countries of origin.
Vanuatu introduced significant reforms in response, including enhanced due diligence aligned with ICAO standards, mandatory biometric enrollment (from July 2025), and an online application portal with real-time tracking. The government has committed to an early APG mutual evaluation commencing March 2026.
What Remains Accessible
The Vanuatu passport still provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 100+ countries and territories, including major business and travel hubs:
- Singapore — 30 days visa-free
- Hong Kong — 90 days visa-free
- UAE — visa on arrival
- Malaysia — 90 days visa-free
- Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand — visa-free or visa on arrival
- Russia — visa-free (mutual waiver since 2016)
- Most of Latin America, Africa, and the Pacific
Vanuatu citizens can also obtain a 5-year US B1/B2 visa allowing up to 180 days per year in the United States.
The Dual-Passport Strategy
For investors who need Schengen and UK access, the solution is straightforward: combine a Vanuatu passport with a Caribbean CBI program.
Dominica (from USD $100,000) and St Kitts and Nevis (from USD $250,000) both offer full Schengen and UK visa-free access. Grenada adds the unique benefit of US E-2 Investor Visa eligibility.
